Everyone has a different approach to Casual Friday, which really depends on whether you work in a creative or more buttoned-up field. Working in media my entire career, first in magazines and then at a web company, I’ve always been granted more slack when it came to dressing for Fridays (and, well, every other day. I still vividly remember the entertainment editor at Ladies’ Home Journal waltzing into the kitchen one day wearing white leather pants, a sleeveless tee and bare feet, her polished pumps and jacket strewn around her office. No one blinked an eye. She was so glamourous.) I could have easily shown up to work in any of my offices in this casual outfit. Casual Friday every day of the week is certainly more common these days in lots of offices.
Of course, dressing for Friday can be a struggle if you work in a more conservative, corporate environment. No matter where you work, the trick is to put some thought into it—wear the funky tee with a great jacket, slip the sneakers on with a dress. It still has to be something you conceived and everything has to look crisp and fresh. If it is, I think you can get away with wearing just about anything.
For this outfit, I wanted to wear this Miu Miu jacket and worked from there. I found it on sale at Net-A-Porter this past December. I look for one sale coat to invest in every year and I fell hard for all the coats from Miu Miu’s Fall/Winter 14 collection. Net-A-Porter is a great place to look for a great coat on sale at the end of the year. I’m obsessed with great outerwear and it pays to invest in this area when you live in a four-seasons city.
Everything in this ensemble—including the bag—was bought on sale, with the exception of the shoes and glasses. I found the Saint Laurent bag on sale at Barneys.com last year. The Saint Laurent bags absolutely go on sale twice a year at Barneys—stay tuned at the end of May.
