Layering for Fall: Key Pieces

The weather is crazy; the election season is nuts. But fashion-wise, it’s all glorious layers where nothing is too heavy. Fall is the best time to use those transitional pieces that may not get worn as much as your heavy knits or easy sundresses but are essential, especially if you live in a four-seasons city. I find it always pays to invest in some of these layering pieces because you can wear them a hundred different ways.

Swap out tall boots for ankle ones and you can wear a wool culotte (these are Dolce & Gabbana) through fall and winter and into still-chilly spring. A knit bomber, like this 3.1 Phillip Lim one, is another resourceful piece. I wore it here under a heavy coat with a sleeveless dress to stay warm indoors. Silk tops are always worth snapping up when you see them on sale; I find I use them even more than I do a plain white tee when I’m layering. I tend to veer toward Alice & Olivia for silk tops. I’m keeping watch on the Equipment ones and plan to snatch one up as soon as they go on sale. I also have my eye on the Proenza Schouler toe-cap boots. Aren’t they gorgeous? Browse these and lots more below.
